Back to Table of Contents
The Canadian Ethnocultural Council (CEC) is a coalition of more than 30 national
ethnocultural organizations that, in turn, represent more than 2,000 local chapters
across Canada. The CEC mandate is to work towards eliminating hate and racism
and promoting the understanding of the multicultural reality of Canada as defined
in The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and The Canadian Multiculturalism
Act. The motto of the CEC - From Diversity Strength - is on the Coat of Arms that
was granted to the CEC by the Governor General of Canada in 1994.
The aims and objectives of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council are:
- To provide a forum for communication among different ethnocultural communities
of Canada;
- To promote the development of equality and justice in the context of a
multicultural Canada;
- To disseminate information on ethnocultural communities and their concerns to
the Canadian public, government, other agencies, elected officials, and media;
- To make representations on behalf of the CEC, and at the request of members of
ethnocultural groups, to various levels of government and non-governmental bodies;
- To secure for ethnocultural communities in Canada equality of opportunity, rights,
and dignity by requesting that various levels of government and non-government
agencies:
- increase representation of ethnocultural groups on public bodies, agencies,
commissions, boards, and advisory committees;
- develop media programs involving ethnocultural communities;
- improve the quality of the educational system and the preservation of
heritage, language, and culture;
- protect human rights in Canada;
