CEC publishes resource manual on “CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE
BEST PRACTICE MODELS FOR HEALTHY AGING”
Ottawa, September 29, 2003 – The Canadian Ethnocultural Council (CEC) is pleased to
announce the successful completion of a resource manual for use by healthcare providers
and healthcare agencies serving ethnic seniors across Canada.
The manual, “Culturally Appropriate Best Practice Models for Healthy Aging”, contains
information about programs that offer culturally sensitive and appropriate services to
help various ethnic populations in healthy aging. The report is based on a needs
assessment study of how healthy aging is viewed by ethnic seniors in a variety of
communities, as well as a survey of the best practice approaches used by agencies
serving ethnic seniors in developing the programs required to meet their community’s
needs. The programs in the manual vary greatly in scope and content, however, essential
contact information is included for each.
The principal beneficiaries of this initiative will be healthcare providers, healthcare
agencies, ethnocultural seniors’ organizations, and ethnocultural seniors and their
families, friends and communities.
“The CEC greatly appreciates support from Health Canada and our partners in the
development of this valuable resource manual,” says Art Hagopian, President of the
CEC. “The comprehensive report, the first of its kind, provides an overview of a
wide range of innovative health and other programs designed to enhance the
process of healthy aging and quality of life for older adults in ethnocultural
communities across the country.”
The CEC, established in 1980, is Canada’s premier advocacy body on multiculturalism
and the country’s only coalition of ethnocultural umbrella organizations. In 1999, the
organization was awarded the SHARE Leadership Award in recognition of outstanding
contributions towards improving the health of senior citizens within Canada’s diverse
ethnic communities. The SHARE Award was established by SmithKline Beecham and
the Institute of Aging, University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A.
